Even though the 4S has an 8 megapixel camera, I think the 4 has a better camera hands down.

[...] During a recent trip to Death Valley National Park, I often took a step back from my ‘big’ camera and pulled out my phone to make some panoramas. If you want to see the big camera photos, click this – Death Valley 2011. The iPhone panoramas are all linked below – the first set was exported from the amazing Photosynth iPhone app and the second set was stitched using AutoStitch. I wrote about both apps in this post a few months ago. [...]

Yeah, the 300mm f/4 was a far superior lens - I just wasn't willing to carry the weight on a 3-week vacation overseas. Packing light was really important to us. If it had been a road trip or something, I probably would have stuck with renting the 300mm f/4 instead of buying the 70-300.

Cool, thanks Robin. I sure hope that the quality only continues to increase, although I appreciate the simpleness of the iPhone's camera. I like that they focus on things like a backlit sensor, rather than a high megapixel count.
And yes, the ability to focus up close was a huge omission on the 3G camera. It also did terrible in low light, though, and I was not impressed with the low-resolution. The 3Gs improved greatly on those last two.

Thank you for this! iPhone 5 is rumored to have 1080p recording and 8mp. At this rate casual photographers can well use a phone to do the job. That is if the sensor is actually capable.

I've done a comparison of the 3G and 3GS myself. The difference is very small until focus comes into play. Pictures from close by are considerably better on the 3GS/4. Something to consider for people looking for old ebay phones.

I I really enjoyed your write-up. This is something I have not tried yet but would like to. I suspect with my P&S and lack of an off camera flash I won't have much success. I do have just the piece of foam board, though:-) The kids would enjoy helping. Thanks for writing up what you did and sharing.
