Well my, do I feel fancy!

My friend @vivekster was nice enough to tweet @uclanewsroom the fact that I finished four years, and our staff/faculty news site (@uclatoday) did a story on @jawsnap, who is me! Twitter FTW!

Here the link – After Hours: a photo a day for 1,462 days

Oh, and although it’s true that I’m not in it for the money, I sure don’t mind making money from it. Please note that nearly all of my photos have a “Buy” button near the top. You can get all sorts of sizes, including ginormous, or contact me for special gifts like cards or calendars :)

I have a big trip planned, worthy of a big lens.

Sharing

Later this year I’ll be in Kruger National Park in South Africa, where there be many animals. Of course I’m struggling with what lenses to bring, and I want to share what I’ve learned so far, a bunch of photos, and why I won’t actually be taking this lens.

In the past I’ve rented a massive Sigma zoom and an ultra-wide Tokina lens and haven’t been particularly impressed, so I wanted to stick with Nikkor this time around. I wanted a long lens (obviously) but wanted the superior quality of a fixed focal length, rather than a zoom lens. I looked around – mostly at Nikon’s website – and settled on the 300mm f/4, which is the equivalent of 450mm on my Nikon D80′s DX sensor. Continue reading »

My One/Day Project is now 75% done, after 3 years and 1095 photos. It’ll be complete on leap day (February 29th) in 2012. Of course, I might just keep going after that…

Panoramic crop of my final photo in Year 3 - the Santa Monica Pier

Like last year, I wanted to do some reflection on the previous year as well as look forward to Year 4. Since no one has volunteered to interview me, here are some questions I asked myself:

What cameras did you use?

The following charts show the breakdown of camera models used in each year so far. Continue reading »

On 8/21/10, my wife and I joined about 30 other Angelenos on a tour of the Los Angeles River. The trip was organized and publicized by Hidden Los Angeles, and led by Jenny Price, an environmental writer/advocate/cool person.

The tour consisted of 5 stops along the 52-mile river, from the channelized drainage system that we all know and love from the movies to areas that have abundant vegetation and wildlife. It was quite eye-opening to see the extremes and to learn the history of the river – Los Angeles wouldn’t exist without it.

Yay! I finished two years!

Today is 2/28/10, which is about as close to 2/29 as you can get in a non-leap year. I started my One/Day Project on 2/29/08, and my plan is to keep going until the next time February 29th comes around in 2012. I might even continue after that, but we’ll see. My life could be completely different in 2 years, you know?

My final photo for Year 2 on 2/28/10. Next up, Year 3...

So how many photos is that?
730.

And you take one every single day?
That’s the rule – I have to take one every day, no pulling from the past. Sometimes I’m not able to upload it that same day, but that doesn’t count. See for yourself – if you hover over the photos on SmugMug, you can view the EXIF data, including capture date/time. Continue reading »

working hard

working hard

I’ve spent some more of my waking hours WordPressing. I chose a new theme, it’s called  Suffusion – you like? I do, it’s nice and simple.

The sad thing is, I have so much to do right now, I shouldn’t be working on this blog. But on the other hand, I’m excited about it and I think I can put a lot of useful content on it. I’ll probably try and do a few reviews and photo setups before trying to push visibility, and of course keep tweaking the appearance.

OK, I think that’s enough for now, I’m basically just talking to myself.
